It was at the age of 19 that João Ferreira made his first official match for Benfica’s first team, but the contractual connection to the Club started long before. The defender joined the Benfica Campus in 2014/15, as a U-14 player, coming from Rio Ave, the emblem where he began his footballing career.
In seven seasons, the young player born in Póvoa de Varzim – U-15 National Champion (2015/16) and U-17 National Champion (2017/18) – arrived at Benfica's first team, after having passed through all the youth levels (U-15s, U-17s, U-19s and U-23s).
On November 21, 2020, João Ferreira was one of the players chosen by Jorge Jesus to start the match from the 3rd round of the Portuguese Cup. The right-back played 90 minutes in the reds’ 0-1 win in Paredes. The following month, on December 10, 2020, João Ferreira made his European debut. The defender, with a career in the youth national teams of Portugal, played the entire match against Standard Liège, in Belgium, for matchday 6 of the Europa League Group D.
