Gian-Luca Waldschmidt did much of his youth development at Eintracht Frankfurt, joining that emblem in 2010/11. In the 2014/15 season, at the age of 18, Waldschmidt made his debut with the first team in the Bundesliga. In 2016, the now Benfica forward put on a new jersey, moving to Hamburg. In 2018/19, he signed for Freiburg and quickly won a place in the starting lineup.
In the first season (2018/19), Waldschmidt made 32 appearances and scored on nine occasions. In the second season (2019/20), the striker did not lower the standards and again spread magic on the pitch in Germany (24 games and eight goals). Waldschmidt went through several categories of the German national team, but it was in 2019 that the boom took place, with a brilliant performance in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He scored seven goals in five matches, becoming one of the top scorers ever in a final stage of an Under-12 Championship.
As one of Germany's young football talents, Waldschmidt is part of a batch of players already involved in the team's renewal process. His debut took place on October 9, 2019, in a friendly match against Argentina. "He has great potential. He's very agile and dangerous around the goal", said then the national coach Joachim Löw.
