Weigl began playing football at SV Ostermünchen and at TSV 1860 Rosenheim, and in 2010, he joined TSV 1860 Munich, the emblem that put him in the spotlight and for which he was the first team captain at the age of 18, the youngest ever in the club.
In 2015, Weigl’s good displays caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, that ended up signed him. He quickly became an important part of the team and moved to Estádio da Luz after 171 games with the German side.
Ottmar Hitzfeld and Toni Kroos publicly praised Weigl's quality and talent, the German international midfielder who was presented as a Benfica new signing on January 2, 2020.
