Regularly present in Dakar, mythical worldwide All-Terrain event, Paulo “Speedy Gonçalves has been showing his strength, technical skills and spirit of solidarity. In November 2016, the Instituto Português do Desporto e da Juventude (IPDJ) attributed the Prémio de Ética no Desporto to the pilot supported by Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
Everything happened at the 2016 Dakar edition. In the motorcycling class, Paulo Gonçalves was leading the race when he realized that Matthias Walker, his rival pilot, had suffered a dangerous accident. The Portuguese could have continued the race, knowing that the medical staff would assist the wounded pilot, getting no penalties. But Paulo Gonçalves, immediately stopped in order to help and raise the alarm, standing next to the wounded pilot until the medical staff’s arrival.
In his sporting career, the pilot collects many victories on Dakar´s stages. The most important achievement on the competition was a 2nd place in 2015. In the 2017’s edition, after announcing his winning plan, Paulo Gonçalves finished sixth on the overall ranking.
With three gold medals on the Seis Dias de Enduro (World Championship – National teams), he was also a Rally World Champion (All-Terrain 2013 Team Honda HRC Speedbrain), 4 times Enduro national champion, 10 times Motocross national champion, 6 times Supercross national champion and TT3 national champion once.
