Blind Wine Game

Who will be the true connoisseur of the wines from the Benfica Wine Cellar?
Follow the instructions below.

Step 1

Choise the wines

Choose between 5 and 8 different wines for the challenge (reds, whites, etc.). Cover the bottles with aluminum foil, opaque bags, or transfer the wines to numbered decanters. Follow this order according to the types of wines you have: sparkling wines, white wines, rosé wines, red wines and liqueurs.

Step 2

Prepare the game

As a referee, define the questions that the participants will have to answer for each wine. Some suggestions are:

  1. Can you identify any grape varieties? (Example: Touriga Nacional, Arinto...)
  2. Where does the wine come from? (Douro, Alentejo, Bairrada, Lisbon, etc.)
  3. How much do you think it costs?
  4. Is the body of the wine lighter or fuller?
  5. Does it have wood or not?
  6. What do you smell in the wine? (Fruits, flowers, spices?)
  7. Is the body of the wine light like water or full-bodied?
  8. Does the taste linger or disappear quickly?
  9. How would you describe the end of the wine?

Check out the details of the wines on the Benfica Wine Cellar page for inspiration. Provide sheets or cards for the players to write down their answers. Include bread, water or neutral snacks to cleanse the palate between tastings. Hand out matching glasses to all participants.

The Challenge begins!

Each participant tastes the wine and answers the questions.

Step 4

Score and winner

Each correct answer is worth 1 point. The player with the most points at the end is crowned the great wine connoisseur of the evening!

Extra tips

For more fun, offer symbolic prizes, such as a bottle of wine or a corkscrew.
Include clues: If the group is a beginner, offer clues about the aromas or regions.
Be inclusive: Offer non-alcoholic alternatives, such as juices or mocktails, for those who prefer them.
Keep the atmosphere relaxed: The aim is to have fun, not to get everything right!
