Rui Costa: "They didn't let us continue in the Cup!"
"These situations were too obvious to talk in muted tones", said President Rui Costa after the quarterfinals of the Portuguese Cup, in Braga, aiming at the flagrant mistakes of the refereeing team led by Tiago Martins to Benfica's detriment. "In an excellent first half-hour, we scored a goal and were denied a penalty to make it 0-2. There is a very clear penalty on Gonçalo Guedes, the images show it! The same referee that a few weeks ago played VAR at Estádio da Luz and almost forced Artur Soares Dias to give a penalty kick against us in a Benfica-Sporting match, in a play with exactly the same dynamics, this time with even more intensity, turned a blind eye, just like VAR Fábio Melo", he said. "I don't dispute Bah's red card, but I don't understand how the same referee and VAR were able to analyze a play, with the same dynamic, between Racic and Fred [Aursnes] differently in the second half. We can't understand that they have two different criteria in the same match! We did everything we could to stay in the Cup, but they didn't allow us", stressed Rui Costa.
