Volleyball
SL Benfica beats SC Espinho and wins the 7th title of its honours.
13 May 2017, 17h16
Pavilion No 2 completely full, with and incredible atmosphere among the supporters on the stands, hardly pushing the respective emblems. Playing at home and with the great majority of the supporters, the players gave a good response in the field.
A balanced first set, with both teams fighting for each point as it was the last one. The "tigers" were stronger and winning 7-8 at the first time-out. But Benfica was not terrified, assumed the lead and at the second time-out was already winning by 16-15. Pushed by the supporters, the eagles took the chance until the end and closed the set with a 25-21 result.
In the following set, once more, the balance was dominant until the second time-out, when Benfica jumped in the scoring through a strong service and a lethal exploitation of SC Espinho's errors. After the 8-7 and the 16-13 at the time-outs, Benfica closed the 2nd set with a result of 25-17.
At the coming of the 3rd set, SC Espinho knew that there was no room for failure and started very strong, but Benfica won back the scoring and at the first time-out was already in the lead, 8-7. At the second time-out the result was 16-13 and, with a nice performance until the end, they won the set by 25-19, and the match: 3-0; becoming National Champions for the 7th time.
At the end of the match, during the party, the coach José Jardim talked about a "great victory" and left compliments to his players: "After concluding the 1st stage with no defeats and being deprived of many athletes, we did it. The athletes were incredible. We have suffered a lot to get this title, but played with responsibility in order to achieve it.
The team's captain, Hugo Gaspar, to BTV, overjoyed with the conquer of the championship: "We achieved our main goal which was to win back the title. It was a long season, full of challenges and we deserve it, based on our work. We have shown that Volleyball is a great sport, full of joy... More victories will come."
