“The squad is valuable and fights for titles”

Carlos Alberto da Rocha Resende, was born on May 29th, 1971 (46 years old), in Lisboa and he is the new coach for the next three seasons.

 His presentation took place on Thursday, at the Press Conference Room.

 "In addition to winning, the possibility to integrate young players is very interesting. My expectancy is to fight for the title. I would like to participate in the Champions League again", he said.

Latterly, there were rumors about this signing...

 "There were rumors behind-the-scenes. But I have only decided after the end of the season with ABC. Today I'm here to communicate my decision. The project lies on the title and valuable young players".

   About the squad: "We'll have players from the Academy in every single position. That is exciting. As a coach, it is awesome to see the athletes’ growth", he said.

 The coach comes from Braga and now he faces a new reality. 

"The ABC is a special team, but the Benfica's facilities and structure are different. Here I can learn with the coaches from the academy and other sports, physiologists..."

"We'll work, but the truth is that the squad is valuable and fights for titles. We'll make some adjustments and keep seeking the victory. I want to bring back the space that Benfica deserves", …speaking about the group: " A coach is only one more member of the team". 

Carlos Resende also spoke about the attendance in the pavilions.

"The sport only makes sense with public. I want to play a nice Handball and the players to have fun. We want to transmit our energy to the supporters and give them titles".

 What it is to represent Benfica?                  

"I cannot say that because I don't know yet. But, when we work for the curriculum something must be wrong. I'm going to give my best because it’s crucial to win all the stages", he concluded. 

Carlos Resende is a big name of the Portuguese Handball, both as a player and coach. His career has started with the age of 8, in Ateneu da Madre Deus, moving after to Sporting CP and later to FC Porto. As a professional he only played in two clubs: FC Porto and ABC de Braga. He won seven Championships, five Portuguese Cups, a Super Cup and Three League Cups, as a player. He was international for 250 times.

 As a coach he won: two National Championships (2008/2009 and 2015/2016), three Portuguese Cups (2006/2007, 2014/2015 and 2016/17), a League Cup (2007/2008), EHF Challenge Cup (2015/2016)
