The head to head shows us that Benfica was visited by Chaves 14 times for the National Championship. The balance is extremely favorable to the Eagles: 12 wins and 2 draws. In total, the Reds have scored 37 goals and have conceded only 7.
At the Reds home ground, the first clash between the two team took place on March 15, 1986. Benfica beat Chaves (4-0) before 60 000 spectators at the old Estádio da Luz, in a match from Matchweek 25 of the National Championship. Rui Águas score the first three goals of the match (11', 14' and 40') and Michael Manniche sealed the win at 63'.
From 1988/89 to 2016/17, Benfica always have been able to better Chaves at home: there are already 11 consecutive wins.
In this set of games, a particular reference to the encounter from Matchweek 8 of the Championship in the 1994/95 season, where the Glorioso won by 5-0, the biggest win in the head to head with Chaves in the most important domestic competition, at Estádio da Luz. Isaías (6', 16') João Vieira Pinto (51'), Amaral (67') and Kenedy (83') scored the goals the gave Benfica the win.
February 24, 2017, was special in this "sporting narrative": Chaves stepped on the pitch of the new Estádio da Luz for the first time (inaugurated on October 25, 2003). Once again the Eagles won, by 3-1 (see video), with goals scored by Mitroglou (17' and 89') and Rafa (49').
At 6:15 pm on Saturday, the Reds, aiming to win the Fifth consecutive league title, host Chaves, for the 15th clash at Estádio da Luz.
