The new calendar year opens with a derby at Estádio da Luz. The tickets will be available on Sunday, but if you don't want to lose more time guarantee your place through the pack "Red Emotion".
15 December 2017, 11h22
The matchday 16 of Liga NOS marks the 84th derby at Luz for the National Championship. It will be the 15th at the new stadium. Benfica dominates the numbers. With 46 triumphs for Benfica against 15 for the rivals, with highlight to the sic consecutive wins, something Benfica managed to achieve from 1942 to 1947 and from 2008 to 2014. It is also worth highlighting, the 19 derbies at Luz in which the home team did not lose (from 1966 to 1985).
At the eagles' home ground, both teams have scored more than 100 goals– Benfica 166, Sporting 105.
With so many celebrations it is only natural to have several routs to report. The most emblematic happened in the 1945/46 season. On April 28th, 1946, the eagles won by 7-2. Mário Rui and Arsénio scored a hat-trick each.
NEW CATHEDRAL, THE SAME DOMINANCE…
The new Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica was inaugurated on October 25th, 2003, but the strength of Benfica in front of their fans remained intact. Sporting started better, with two wins in the first three matches, but the 2004/05 triumph was special because it allowed Benfica to win the title 11 years later.
From then on Benfica has the upper hand! Seven victories in the last 10 matches prove that the eagle has been flying very high in the biggest derby in Portugal.
… AND THE SUPPORTERS RISE TO THE OCCASION
The supporters – from both clubs – are a crucial piece in this puzzle. With 65 thousand seats, Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica received 829 184 spectators in all 14 games.
