Benfica ends the year of 2017 as the only Portuguese team within UEFA's top 10, with a total of 102 points in the last five seasons (2012/13 to 2016/17) in the European competition.

With three seasons above 20 points in five, the emphasis should be given to 2013/14 (29) and to 2012/13 (26), seasons in which the Club reached the final of the Europa League. 2015/16 was also very positive, the first season of Rui Vitória at the helm of the eagles, with 22 points, due to the presence in the Champions League quarter-finals.

At the top of the ranking is Real Madrid, the current holder of the Champions League, with 156 points.

Benfica fought until the end for a different outcome in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but after extra time they fell to Chelsea (1-4), thus ending their journey in the first edition of the competition in the United States of America. In a game that was interrupted in the 86th minute due to the threat of a thunderstorm and ended almost five hours after the kick-off, Di María leveled the score at 90'+5' (1-1), taking the match into 30 minutes of extra time, during which time the result hung in the balance for the English at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
