The extraordinary general meeting of Liga Portugal, this Tuesday, has determined a new competitive model for the 2020/21 League Cup (Allianz Cup).

In force only this season, to face a limited calendar due to COVID-19, the League Cup will have only 8 teams. The qualified teams will be the first six on the Liga NOS table and the first two on the LigaPro table after the conclusion of November’s last matchday.

The final four will take place between January 16 and 23, 2021. 

Benfica is the team with the most titles in the competition: 7. The eagles celebrated in 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2014/15 and 2015/16.

Benfica fought until the end for a different outcome in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but after extra time they fell to Chelsea (1-4), thus ending their journey in the first edition of the competition in the United States of America. In a game that was interrupted in the 86th minute due to the threat of a thunderstorm and ended almost five hours after the kick-off, Di María leveled the score at 90'+5' (1-1), taking the match into 30 minutes of extra time, during which time the result hung in the balance for the English at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

After a day off, Benfica's professional football team trained at Waters Sportsplex in Tampa on Thursday, June 26, with their sights set on the round of 16 of the Club World Cup. In this stage of the competition, the Eagles will face Chelsea at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at 9:00 pm in mainland Portugal (4:00 pm local time) on Saturday, June 28.
