The handball National Team secured the presence at the Olympic Games that will take place in Japan, after beating France by 29-28, in Montpellier, in the Pre-Olympic Tournament. The Benfica players Gustavo Capdeville and Bélone Moreira were options for Paulo Pereira.

In a thrilling game until the last second, Portugal scored the goal that allowed them to win and sealed their ticket to Japan two seconds before the final whistle, through Rui Silva.
