Benfica's opponent in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League, Spartak already officially kicked off 2021/22 season. This Saturday, the team from Moscow made their debut in the Russian league with a visit to Rubin Kazan's home ground, where they lost by 1-0.

The team under coach Rui Vitória featured the following Starting XI: Maksimenko, Rasskazov, Gigot, Dzhikiya, Ayrton, Zobnin, Umyarov, Moses, Promes, Larsson and Sobolev. During the match the coach made the following changes: Moses, Larsson, Promes, Zobnin and Umyarov came off and were replaced by Bakaev (60'), Ignatov (60'), Mirzov (70'), Melkadze (82') and Kral (82').


The first clash between Benfica and Spartak, in the Russian capital, is scheduled for August 4 (Wednesday), at 6 pm Portuguese time. The following week, the eagles host the Moscow team at 8 pm on August 10 (Tuesday), in the second leg of the tie.

Vertonghen "very happy" for the 50 matches with an eagle on his chest

Jan Vertonghen was a starter in the center of Benfica's defense in the game from matchday 6 of the Liga Bwin against Boavista at Estádio da Luz on September 20 and he reached a milestone in his career with the Sacred Mantle. "I am very happy for the 50 matches with an eagle on my chest!", share the Belgian international in Portuguese.


Diogo Gonçalves makes 50 appearances in the first team

Diogo Gonçalves featured in Benfica's starting eleven against Boavista, in a match held at Estádio da Luz, for matchday 6 of the Liga Bwin. In a game in which he reached 50 matches for the eagles first team, he provided the assist  for Darwin's goal, which opened the scoring in the 3-1 triumph. "I am very happy to have completed 50 games for Benfica's first team. May 50 more come, together with all of you! Thanks for the support", shared the defender, addressing the Benfiquistas.
