Otamendi and Di María, players from Benfica's professional football team, have been called up for Argentina's international matches in October.

The two world champions are part of Lionel Scaloni's official squad list for Argentina's matches against Paraguay (October 12, local time) and Peru (October 17, local time), both of which are valid for the South American qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup, on matchdays 3 and 4 respectively.

Benfica fought until the end for a different outcome in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but after extra time they fell to Chelsea (1-4), thus ending their journey in the first edition of the competition in the United States of America. In a game that was interrupted in the 86th minute due to the threat of a thunderstorm and ended almost five hours after the kick-off, Di María leveled the score at 90'+5' (1-1), taking the match into 30 minutes of extra time, during which time the result hung in the balance for the English at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
