The president of Benfica has addressed this Tuesday's clash against Internazionale in Italy, and commented on the absence of Benfica fans at San Siro.
03 October 2023, 18h10
Rui Costa
"For a club that lives for the fans and for the fans, it is always a big setback [not having fans in the stands]. Unfortunately, we will have to play like this today, but we will play for them too", said the President of Benfica.
Knowing the corridors of the San Siro Stadium, since he represented AC Milan (and also Fiorentina) as a player, Rui Costa showed his belief in a great environment: "We are in Italy, at San Siro, we will play against a great team, we play the Champions League, and I can only expect a great atmosphere."
Ensuring that trust is part of the Club’s DNA, the President reinforced that the team starts every game to win. "Benfica enter every game with the ambition to win. We will not be looking at History. He will look at what today’s game is [Tuesday, October 3] and do everything to win," he said, refusing any revenge due to last season’s tie.
"Rematch? No. Last season we lost in the quarter-finals, Inter reached the final and could have won. But this is a Champions League game, a different game from last time. It’s been five months, it was the quarter finals, and now we are in the group stage. We lost the first game, we have to make a good result here", he concluded.
