Benfica beat Lusitânia by 1-4 in the 3rd round of the Portuguese Cup.
20 October 2023, 20h33
Benfica team
With several changes to the line-up, Roger Schmidt chose Samuel Soares, Aursnes, António Silva, Morato, Juan Bernat, João Neves, Chiquinho, João Mário, Rafa, Tengstedt and Arthur Cabral to start the match.
Minuto 9, João Mário In the 9th minute, João Mário faced the goal, believed in it, and the away side's keeper punched it away. The ball reached Aursnes, a cross from the right, and the eagles' No. 20, with his back heel, put the ball into the back of the net. It was 0-1.
As the minutes passed, the rain and wind persisted and the pitch became heavier... but Rafa, in a legal position, made it 0-2 without difficulty. In the 36th minute, Chiquinho found the striker, who looked Diogo Sá in the eye and fired an unstoppable shot.
In the 42nd minute, Gonçalo Cabral's shot was deflected for a corner by Samuel Soares... A corner was then taken, and a penalty was awarded, with the referee adjudging Aursnes to have fouled Gonçalo Cabral. Enzo Ferrara coolly slotted home from the 11-meter line to make it 1-2.
The second half began with two new faces on the pitch: Jurásek and Gonçalo Guedes came on in place of Juan Bernat and Tengstedt.
Benfica pressed, but on the other side was a Lusitânia side that continued to believe. A belief that fell apart in the 68th minute. Diogo Sá made a bad pass, Chiquinho recovered the ball and passed it to Gonçalo Guedes, who, with an exquisite assist, gave Arthur Cabral his first goal for the eagles. He chipped the ball in to make it 1-3.
Benfica extended their lead to 1-4 with a great goal. Aursnes, with a pass from deep, found Tiago Gouveia who took off from the central corridor down the right flank, made a run in possession from the halfway line and chipped out Diogo Sá.
Final whistle, 1-4 to Benfica, fair enough, against a brave Lusitânia side who believed as long as they had the strength. The eagles came out determined, started to settle things early on, and thus continue their journey in a competition in which they are hegemonic on Portuguese soil (26 Portuguese Cups won) and which they want to win again!
Back on the continent and a new competitive window opens, the Champions League. Benfica hosts Real Sociedad at Estádio da Luz in a game from matchday 3 of group D, schdeuled for 8 pm on Tuesday, October 24.
