Marcel Matz, coach of the men's volleyball team of Benfica, was voted Best Coach of the Year by the National Association of Volleyball Coaches at the organization's 26th meeting, which took place this weekend, June 29 and 30, in Matosinhos, at Colégio Efanor.

After a 2023/24 season in which he guided the eagles to an unprecedented fifth league title in a row and to the Super Cup, the Red coach won 42% of the votes, repeating the award he won last year.

Rita Fernandes, coach of the Under-21s and assistant coach of the women's first team, was also honored at the event, being voted Best Coach in the Training category, with 25.8% of the votes.

Benfica-Tirsense: extended match highlights (4-0)

In front of almost 50,000 spectators at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica confirmed their qualification for the 2024/2025 Portuguese Cup final on Wednesday night, April 23, by beating Tirsense 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final (goals from António Silva, Bajrami, Belotti and Barreiro). In the first game, the Eagles had won 0-5. Thus, with a 9-0 aggregate in the semi-final, the Glorioso reached the decisive match of the Portuguese Cup for the 39th time. On their way to Jamor, the Reds overcame Pevidém (0-2), Estrela da Amadora (7-0), Farense (1-3), SC Braga (1-0) and, finally, Tirsense in a two-legged tie.

A moving tribute to Humberto Coelho

Having celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday, April 20, Humberto Coelho received a heartfelt and well-deserved tribute on Wednesday, April 23, at the Estádio da Luz, during half-time of the Benfica-Tirsense (4-0) second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals. Captain for many years, he wore the Manto Sagrado for “14 fantastic seasons” and, on the pitch, he gave a special thanks to the fans. "This is more than soul, it's an extraordinary mystique! Only at Benfica can you feel this recognition and this glory and memory of having played for the best club in the world," said the former central defender.
