Otamendi

Otamendi, captaion of Benfica, took the decisive penalty that enabled Argentina to qualify for the semi-finals of the Copa América in the match against Ecuador in the early hours of Friday, July 5, at the NRG Stadium in Houston, USA.

The center-back came off the bench – where there was also Di María – in the 78th minute, when Argentina were leading 1-0 – a goal from Lautaro Martínez in the 35th minute – and saw the Ecuadorians equalize in the 90th minute through Kevin Rodríguez, making the score 1-1 in regulation time.

In the penalty shootout, the series began with Lionel Messi missing goal from 11 meters, something that Mena and Minda also did for the Ecuadorians. Otamendi took the last penalty, making the score 4-2.

In the semi-final, Argentina will face the winner of the match between Venezuela and Canada, to take place in the early hours of July 10 (Wednesday).
