Eusébio remembered in over 700 photos

In the year that Eusébio da Silva Ferreira would have celebrated his 83rd birthday, a young man with the same name carries the King's name on his back. Born in 2014 and named after the greatest figure in Benfica's history, who had left six months earlier, Eusébio da Silva Vicente, who was also brought into the world in Mozambique, is inspired by the Black Panther's legacy to make his way through Benfica's youth system. On January 25, 1942, Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, was born. From Mozambique to the world, he became Sport Lisboa e Benfica's greatest figure. An idol to many, a legend to many others, he won over football lovers - and beyond! - with his performances, goals and achievements. He died on January 5, 2014, but he lives on in the memory of Benfiquistas, who, in various ways, eternalize the King. Spread across the globe, 49 members of the Club carry with them an attribute of inescapable strength: the name “Eusébio”. In a simple tribute to mark the Black Panther's 83rd birthday - this Saturday - his granddaughter, Maria da Silva Ferreira, shares the same story, one of many that keep her grandfather's legacy “very much alive among Benfica fans”.

This Sunday, January 5, marks 11 years since the departure of the greatest icon in the history of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. On a day marked by eternal longing, remember Eusébio da Silva Ferreira's career and remarkable moments with the "Manto Sagrado", as well as the moving national and international tributes that followed the death of a King who will never lose his crown in the hearts of all Benfiquistas.

An icon of Benfica and Portuguese judo, Telma Monteiro donated the kimono she wore in her last competition for the club, specifically the National Club Championship in October 2024, which earned her the women's title, to the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião. The judoka also donated the belt she wore during her last Olympic cycle. “It's the place where it makes the most sense to stay, leaving a little of my legacy, preserving my history with Benfica,” said Telma Monteiro.

On Friday, May 16, the European Night of Museums took place at the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião, which was free to enter between 6 pm and midnight and welcomed 1,166 visitors. The pre-launch of the photobiography “Euséb10”, by João Malheiro, took place this Sunday, July 28, at the Benfica Official Store Estádio, and was attended by Sandra Ferreira, daughter of the mythical number 10 of the eagles, and Toni, former player and coach of the club, Mister Benfica. Opened by the President of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Rui Costa, and with a foreword by José Mourinho, the book, published in Portuguese and English, is a way of paying tribute to “the greatest popular hero of the 20th century in Portugal”, as João Malheiro told BTV. Toni recalled that Eusébio “will always be the Club's greatest reference, as he marks the history of Benfica and world football”, and Sandra Ferreira was grateful for the “tribute”, on a “special day”, with the Eusébio Cup match at the Cathedral.
