On Wednesday, January 29, SL Benfica paid tribute to the Torino team that was the victim of a plane crash on May 4, 1949. On the way back to Turin, after a friendly match with the Eagles in Lisbon, dense fog caused the aircraft carrying the Italian delegation to crash into the Basilica. Next to the Superga memorial that commemorates the tragedy, José Pereira da Costa, chairman of SL Benfica's General Assembly, Domingos Almeida Lima and Rui Passo, vice-presidents, and João Paço, member of the Supervisory Board, laid a wreath. “Memory is preserved, and that is the duty of men. In fulfillment of our ethical duty, we are here to pay tribute to the Torino champions. In this way, we honor the past of our glorious club,” José Pereira da Costa told reporters.
