The Sport Lisboa e Benfica's judoka, Telma Monteiro, is the great novelty for the European Open, which will take place in Minsk (Belarus), between the 22nd and 23rd of July.

After the injury, the athlete returns to compete in the -57 kg category.

The Benfica's athletes Gonçalo Mansinho (-60 kg), João Martinho (-81 kg) and Célio Dias (-100 kg), will also be present at the international competition.

Telma Monteiro's donation to the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião

An icon of Benfica and Portuguese judo, Telma Monteiro donated the kimono she wore in her last competition for the club, specifically the National Club Championship in October 2024, which earned her the women's title, to the Benfica Museum – Cosme Damião. The judoka also donated the belt she wore during her last Olympic cycle. “It's the place where it makes the most sense to stay, leaving a little of my legacy, preserving my history with Benfica,” said Telma Monteiro.

On Monday, December 9, judoka Telma Monteiro announced the end of her sporting career.  It's been “24 very special years”, 17 of which have been spent with an eagle on her chest and, at the time of his farewell, there is “eternal gratitude”. “I'm ending my career exactly as I wanted to, with the feeling that I've given everything I had to give, and that everything was as it should be,” she said. Thank you, Telma!

COP distinguishes Benfica athletes

Benfica athletes Telma Monteiro and Pedro Pichardo were honored by the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) on Thursday, November 14, at the 2024 Olympic Celebration, a gala held at SUD Hall Lisbon. Judoka Telma Monteiro was awarded the Prestige Award, which honors “sports agents for the excellence, notability and prestige of their careers”. Pedro Pichardo, triple jump athlete and Paris 2024 silver medalist, received the Sports Excellence Award, which is given to “Olympic medalists, World or European Champions”. Domingos Almeida Lima, Benfica's vice-president, represented the club at the ceremony.
