The team led by José Jardim traveled to Romania to beat Steaua Bucharest by 2-3. The second leg will be played at 8:30 pm on January 31 at Luz!
18 January 2018, 19h00
José Jardim's men, leaders of the National, traveled to Romania to play the first leg of the eighth finals of the Challenge Cup. Benfica faced Steaua Bucharest, in an intense match, played at Mihal Viteazul Hall.
Benfica entered the game on the front foot but allowed the Romanians to make a comeback and win the 1st set by 25-21. The Portuguese National Champion responded and won the 2nd set by 16-25.
The home team entered stronger in the 3rd set, but Benfica did not give up, got the lead (8-9) and won the set by 17-25. The Romanians responded without further delay and despite the Eagles arrived to the 1st and 2nd technical time-outs in front, Steaua got the lead (19-17) and won the 4th set by 25-20. 2-2 in the match, all tied again!
Then came the fifth set! Intensity, fighting spirit and ambition on the court, with Benfica getting the upper end in the final stage, winning the set (11-15) and the match by 2-3! A fair result!
Benfica got a precious edge, but the team must confirm it at Luz! The 2nd leg of the eighth-finals of the Challenge Cup is scheduled for the last day of January. It is a Wednesday, with the two team set to lock horns at Pavilhão n.º 2 da Luz at 8:30 pm.
