The Official Website elaborates an objective and deep analysis to the several Benfica’s paths towards the opposite nets.
20 February 2018, 20h13
Early goals, in the last minutes, through the three corridors, lab goals… for every taste, consequence of great combinations, individual moves and shots from outside the area, free-kicks and penalties.
39 GOALS AFTER CONTINUOUS MOVES/QUICK ATTACKS
It was Haris Seferovic, with his right foot and inside the area, who scored the first of the 59 Benfica’s goals until this moment in Liga NOS. On August 9th, in the home match against SC Braga, in the very first round of the National Championship, the Swiss new signing scored at minute 14 after a tremendous assistance by Jonas. Since then, more 38 goals built open plays or quick attacks (13 born on the left, 17 on the right and 9 came from the center).
20 GOALS AFTER SET PIECES / FORMATIONS
Benfica has been demonstrating a great exploitation of the set pieces and lab situations (formations). The eagles count with a total of 20 goals resulting from this kind of moves, which represent a net of 33,9% among the total 59 goals scored (2 free-kicks, 2 lateral free-kicks, 11 corners and 5 penalties).
This season, the free-kick’ goals came delayed a little bit. Jonas was the first to be successful: in the last seconds of the away match at Restelo, in the Matchday 20 of the Champinship. After that it was Cervi’s turn to debut in goals, scoring the 1-2 in a match that would end with 1-3 result
Special prominence to the corner-kicks: altogether, 11 goals scored due to these formations.
AREAS WHERE THE GOALS WHERE SCORED
The penalty box is, naturally, the main area for the final touch. There, either home or away, Benfica has already scored 37 goals. And the first one was right in the home match against SC Braga, in Matchday 1. Long ball from the left by Pizzi, right to the interior of the area, Raul Silva tried to intercept, but the ball came short and Jonas scored his first one in Liga NOS 2017/18 (30').
In the goal area, the reds count with 14 goals and 8 successful shots from outside the area (Salvio, Benfica-Belenenses; André Almeida, Benfica-Portimonense; Cervi, Benfica-P. Ferreira and Portimonense-Benfica; Samaris, V. Guimarães-Benfica; Jonas, Benfica-Chaves and Belenenses-Benfica; and Pizzi, Benfica-Chaves).
In 23 weeks, it has been room for goals of every taste and shape… With left foot (14), right (36, counting with the own-goal by Henrique in the home match against Boavista) and even with the head (9). After all, it was with a header that Jonas scored his 100th goal with the red jersey, against V. Setúbal (6-0).
