Bruno Varela, the goalkeeper of Benfica, was present in the Social Center of São Boaventura, in Lisbon, to participate in a conference on violence. April is the month of the Prevention of Maltreatment in the Childhood and Youth and the working group "Comunidades" marked the occasion with an activity for young people and technicians who work with the younger people.

The owner of the Reds' goal was invited to address the vast audience present and answered several questions posed to the invited panel where it was also present Nuno Gomes.

Born in a less-favored area of Lisbon, Bruno Varela knows the reality that many young people are living in today.

It was a difficult life. I have friends that have chosen a certain life, and I say they were my friend because they never let me go down that path. What they told me when I arrived at Benfica - and my relatives - was that I was the future. I always had this kind of advice that helped me a lot. At the age of 16, I went to the Training Center of Seixal and that also helped. I was at an age when we are very curious and could be tempted to fall into this life. We must choose between two paths: either you go where everyone goes and you enter that life or you choose the other path and you think you have goals in life, you set them and you try to achieve them. I chose that path and I am doing my journey without forgetting where I came from”, he revealed.

The example of the Benfica goalkeeper jibes with the motto of the event: “The best way to take care of a problem is to prevent it from happening.”
