Rui Pinto was the best Portuguese in the European Cross-Country Championships, with the 16th place in an event held in Samorin, in Slovakia

The athlete of Benfica finished the course in 30.44 minutes, 59 seconds behind the winner, the Turkish Kaan Kigen Özbilen (29.45), who relegated the Spanish Adel Mechaal (29.54) and the British Andrew Butchart (30.00) for the second and third places, respectively.

In the women, Marta Pen was 20th, 12 seconds behind Sara Catarina Ribeiro (Sporting) who finished the race in the 18th place, in 28 minutes. Hugo Ganchas (Benfica), with the 30th place, was the best Portuguese representative in the U23.

Portugal finished in eighth place in the team standing, with 90 points.

Two goals, two works of art from the team

The first two goals that led Benfica to victory over Tondela (3-0) on Saturday night, August 23, in Matchday 3 of the Liga Betclic, perfectly reflect the "collective work" emphasized and praised by Bruno Lage after the most recent game played at Estádio da Luz. “It was essential to vary our build-up play, sometimes with two, sometimes with three, also varying the players so that the opponent had no individual references in pressing. And then, knowing how to find the paths to goal”, said the coach. The plays that led to the 1-0 (more than 30 seconds of possession until Ivanovic's lethal shot) and 2-0 (more than 40 seconds of circulation until Aursnes' shot) are eloquent, a hymn to good football.

Saturday night, August 23, marked the return of the Liga Betclic to the Cathedral. In the 2025/26 edition of the competition, on Matchday 3, Benfica hosted and beat Tondela 3-0, in front of 61,229 fans in the stands. With a powerful start, scoring goals, followed by intelligent management and control, the Eagles secured their main objective, winning three points. Ivanovic (31'), Aursnes (42'), and Prestianni (90'+6') scored the goals in the Reds' well-deserved victory. Foundation offers a helping hand to Cape Verde

The President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, visited Estádio da Luz for a meeting with Carlos Moia, executive president of the Benfica Foundation, dedicated to humanitarian aid for the island of São Vicente, recently affected by a severe storm. The head of state emphasized the “long-standing and close relationship” between Cape Verde and Benfica, noting that this cooperation “will have a very strong impact on São Vicente”. Carlos Moia stressed that “the people themselves and their needs are important,” guaranteeing that all hospital supplies will be in Cape Verde by mid-September.
