Sport Lisboa e Benfica and Sporting CP locked horns, this Sunday, in the derby from round 20 of the Liga NOS. At Estádio José Alvalade, an emphatic win from the eagles by 2-4 in an intense match.

“Above all, what we wanted was to come here and win! I think that we did a great performance, very complete and we were always better than Sporting. We faced a great opponent, with players of huge quality, but since the first moment we had a lot of strength, a lot of quality with and without ball possession and this victory is entirely fair and could even have been by higher numbers”, explained Pizzi.

“We had chances for that to happen, but what we wanted was to come here and win, whether it was by 1-0, 3-0 or 5-0. We did it! We are in the fight, we are strong and we want to stay that way!”, added the midfielder.

Benfica-Tirsense: extended match highlights (4-0)

In front of almost 50,000 spectators at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica confirmed their qualification for the 2024/2025 Portuguese Cup final on Wednesday night, April 23, by beating Tirsense 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final (goals from António Silva, Bajrami, Belotti and Barreiro). In the first game, the Eagles had won 0-5. Thus, with a 9-0 aggregate in the semi-final, the Glorioso reached the decisive match of the Portuguese Cup for the 39th time. On their way to Jamor, the Reds overcame Pevidém (0-2), Estrela da Amadora (7-0), Farense (1-3), SC Braga (1-0) and, finally, Tirsense in a two-legged tie.

A moving tribute to Humberto Coelho

Having celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday, April 20, Humberto Coelho received a heartfelt and well-deserved tribute on Wednesday, April 23, at the Estádio da Luz, during half-time of the Benfica-Tirsense (4-0) second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals. Captain for many years, he wore the Manto Sagrado for “14 fantastic seasons” and, on the pitch, he gave a special thanks to the fans. "This is more than soul, it's an extraordinary mystique! Only at Benfica can you feel this recognition and this glory and memory of having played for the best club in the world," said the former central defender.
