The coach of Benfica, Rui Vitória, analyzed the match against Borussia Dortmund for the International Champions Cup. The eagles won in the penalty shootout after a 2-all draw at full time.

Since the start, we wanted to have the control of the match, to be a determined team and with a great enthusiasm, which took us some clarity in the defensive process because we wanted to win the ball up front and very quickly. We were always a very pro-active and cheerful team, wanting to have ball possession. At halftime, we rectified, we need to be more united, have more patience, wait for the ball… we ended up scoring two goals and winning in the penalty shootout fairly. We faced a great opponent, with interesting dynamics and had won all matches so far. We played toe-to-toe and we were better, with justice being made in the penalties”, he said.

Agradecimentos

In the pre-season, it is normal to have a high squad rotation, but even so, there are players with more minutes than others and Rui Vitória explained the reason why.

“That is part of the pre-season process of all teams. The players are all working well, but each one needs individual processes in his path to reach the best form. Each player has his own reality, it has nothing to do with particular issues.  I was pleased with all the players and with the team. There was the issue of the conceded goals, but it is normal against an opponent with quality players in the attack. But that does not hinder the overall performance of a team that is growing, very determined and confident”, he clarified.

The American midfielder Keaton Parks has been working with the first team and deserved praises from the coach.

“He arrived at Benfica last year, he is a quality player who is carrying out an evolutive process and in whom we believe”, he said.
