The two teams faced in the group stage of the 2010/11 edition of the Champions League, with a triumph for each team. Next comes the clash for the Eusébio Cup.

Within the 10th edition of the Eusébio Cup and in the International Champions Cup, this is the first non-official clash between the two teams.
The first clash was on October 20, 2010. At the old Stadium of Olympique Lyonnais, the Gerland, the home team won 2-0, in a match from the gameweek 3 of the Champions League group stage.

A few days later, on November 2, the French traveled to Estádio da Luz. Week 4 of Group B, with Benfica hitting the ground running. At the end of the first half, the Reds were in front by 3-0.
From that starting XI, two names are still amongst the working group that starts 2018/19: Luisão and Salvio. The opening goal of the match was at 20’, by Kardec. Fábio Coentrão doubled the lead at 32’ and Javi García scored the 3-0 at 42’. In the second half, Benfica scored the 4-0 at 67’, with Fábio Coentrão completing his brace.
Gourcuff scored the 4-1 at 74’ and Gomis scored the 4-2 10 minutes later. In the injury time, at 90’+4’, Lovren scored the 4-3.
