Benfica could have got in front in the early minutes of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League, but the referee did not award a clear penalty on Cervi, who would score the winner against Fenerbahçe (1-0).
07 August 2018, 22h42
Benfica won with a goal from Cervi (69’), but the football produced, especially in the second half, deserved a big result for the second leg, that will take place on August 14, in Istanbul.
After the break, the eagles were more dynamic and quickly created a pair of attacking plays that could have ended with the ball on the back of Demirel's back.
Already with Castillo in the attack (he replaced Ferreyra at 61’), Benfica scored the 1-0. Salvio made a cross on the right towards Cervi, who, on the opposite side, pulled the ball to his left foot and beat Demirel (69’).
Benfica had a higher ball possession (63%), produced more attacks, made more, but the difference in the scoreboard did not change until the final whistle.
