Fernando Tavares: "We applaud the decision to postpone the Olympic Games"

For the o vice-president of SL Benfica, the "difficult moment" experienced because of the COVID-19 pandemic "is also a learning process".

After the official decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Olympic Games from 2020 to 2021 due to COVID-19 was announced, the vice-president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica Fernando Tavares exposed the Club's point of view.

The official announcement took place early Tuesday afternoon. What comment does the postponement of the Olympic Games deserve?

Benfica congratulates the decision made by IOC. I think they took to long, it was an inevitability because there were no conditions for the Games to be held. There was pressure from many countries that were already refusing to go to Tokyo, and many local Olympic committees had made exposures to the International Olympic Committee.

In adversity, there are also opportunities. Will this give even more strength to Benfica's Olympic Project?

We will all have a great challenge. We have to stop and think about new solutions and options, but I think this also turns out to be a learning process, and let's hope that we can all, collectively, get through this difficult time.
