The Storage, Conservation and Restoration Department of Sport Lisboa e Benfica was proclaimed the winner of the 2020 Keck Award, which is presented by the International Institute for Conservation (IIC) every two years to the projects and organisations that promote the understanding and appreciation of the accomplishments of the conservator-restorer profession. The nomination had been announced in October and the winner announcement happened at the 2020 IIC Edinburgh Congress.
This is a moment that the coordinator of the Cultural Heritage Direction of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Maria Inês Mata, considers to be of great importance for all involved.
"To crown these ten years of the Storage, Conservation and Restoration Department it is a great honor to be the first Portuguese project to receive this distinction. The recognition of our work by an institution with the importance of the IIC motivates us to continue, with diligence and creativity, the mission of valuing the Cultural Heritage of Sport Lisbon e Benfica."
Among the nominees, there were other reference institutions and projects, such as "Conservation in Action: Saving the Perth Mummy" from the Perth Museum & Art Gallery and "Conservation - Craft or Science?", from the Conservation Department of IAMM (Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia), among others.
