Pedro Pichardo's medal is the first gold medal for Portugal in Tokyo and the 4th Portuguese medal at the event, after Patrícia Mamona, Jorge Fonseca and Fernando Pimenta, which sets the best result ever for the country in an Olympic Games. The Benfica triple jump athlete is the 5th Portuguese Olympic champion.

STATEMENTS TO RTP

Pedro Pichardo: "For me, representing Portugal is a privilege. It is with medals and results that I want to thank the country. On that victory jump [17.98 meters] I felt I was carrying the whole country with me. I received a lot of messages from the Portuguese giving me support in the last days. When I made that jump I already felt a little more at ease in the competition."
