Benfica will face Ajax in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The draw for this phase of the competition took place on Monday, December 13, at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

For not being a seeded team in the draw, Benfica plays the 1st leg at home. The 1st leg matches will take place on 15/16/22 or 23 of March 2022, and the second leg matches for  8/9/15 or 16 of March.

It should be noted that the draw for the the round of 16 of the Champions League was initially held at 11:00 am this Monday, December 13, determining Real Madrid as Benfica's opponent, but a technical error led UEFA to repeat the procedure at 2:00 pm.

Benfica fought until the end for a different outcome in the last 16 of the Club World Cup, but after extra time they fell to Chelsea (1-4), thus ending their journey in the first edition of the competition in the United States of America. In a game that was interrupted in the 86th minute due to the threat of a thunderstorm and ended almost five hours after the kick-off, Di María leveled the score at 90'+5' (1-1), taking the match into 30 minutes of extra time, during which time the result hung in the balance for the English at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
