WITH AN EAGLE ON HIS CHEST

Darwin Nuñez, the Sport Lisboa e Benfica striker, 22, moves to Liverpool. The Uruguayan international arrived at Luz at the beginning of 2020/21, was the top scorer of the last edition of the Liga Bwin (26 goals) and showed himself to the elite of football in the Europa League and Champions League.

Senior international for Uruguay – 11 matches/2 goals –, the number 9 started his career in the clubs in the area where he lived: La Luz and San Miguel de Artigas. At the age of 15, he traveled to Montevideo to represent Peñarol.

It was in yellow and black that he made his senior debut. His goal scoring ability, athletic ability, and pace caught the eye, and the Spaniards of Almería signed him in 2019/20. In Spain's second division, he confirmed his credentials, with exciting numbers: 32 matches and 16 goals scored (average of 0,5 per match).

On September 4, 2020, he was presented at Benfica Campus as Benfica's new number 9.

He made his debut on September 15, in Greece, where Benfica faced PAOK (2-1 loss) in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League. The Uruguayan came on at 65' to replace Pedrinho.

Three days later, Darwin featured in the starting eleven. In the opening round of the National Championship, the eagles played away at Famalicão (1-5 win). Darwin provided two assists. He came off at 72' and was replaced by Vinícius.

Darwin’s first Benfica goal happened on October 22. The Europa League group stage, Lech Poznan-Benfica, in Poland. The Reds won by 2-4, with Darwin opening the scoring at 42'. In the second half, he scored two more goals and completed his hat trick!

In total, Darwin scored 48 goals in 85 matches with an eagle on his chest (0,56 per match) and 15 assists. The apogee really came in 2021/22, a season in which he achieved an average of 0.83 goals per match in official terms (41 matches/34 goals) and was the top scorer of the Liga Bwin, with 26 goals.
