Facing a defensively well organized opponent and in a particularly lackluster first half, the Reds let Caldas believe. At 38', and after Aursnes had a goal disallowed for offside, the best opportunity of the first half came for the home team.

João Silva surprised everyone with a long range shot and forced Helton Leite into an important save – the ball still hit the post of the goal guarded by the Brazilian goalkeeper (38').
