João Mário: "We must be at the highest level against a good opponent"

Proud of the Reds' path in the group stage of the Champions League, João Mário is looking forward to a new page of success in the first leg of the round of 16, that will start this Wednesday, February 15, against Club Brugge, at the Jan Breydel Stadium (8 pm). 

Benfica returns to the Champions League. Will the squad continue to show the European profile displayed so far?

Above all, that is what we want. We are back in an important competition, the best in terms of clubs, and we know we must be at the highest level to play a great game against a good opponent. We are very motivated to play a great game.

You were voted Best Midfielder of the Month (December/January) in the Liga Bwin. What has coach Roger Schmidt brought to your style of play?

Individual awards are always good, I'm happy. It's the result of collective work, and I thank the team, which has helped me a lot. The coach has put me in a position and tactical concept that I really like, with offensive football, which helps not only me but also my teammates. We play a style of football that I like a lot and that benefits me a lot.

Club Brugge has changed coaches, it is now led by Englishman Scott Parker. What kind of opponent are you expecting?

It's a Champions match, and we look at what was done in the group stage. Brugge has a different coach, but has very talented players and a mix of young and experienced players. It is a rival that plays at home, plays good football, and it will certainly be difficult to win the game. Only a great Benfica will be able to win.
