Benfica's defender was elected by the coaches and captains of the competition.
21 June 2023, 15h05
Otamendi
Benfica's skipper, who recently renewed his contract with the Club, was a key part of the national champion's team. Roger Schmidt fielded the Argentine international in the starting eleven in 31 of the 34 rounds of the competition, that is, whenever he has been available to play.
Otamendi was the third most used Benfica player in the National Championship, totaling 2775 minutes of play (injury time not included), during which he recovered 247 balls (among other relevant statistics) and scored a goal that earned a victory.
Otamendi also deserved the confidence of Argentina's national team coach Lionel Scaloni, who, between November and December 2022, during the interruption of the Liga Bwin, used the central defender from start to finish in the seven matches played by the Albiceleste in the World Cup in Qatar, in which they became world champions.
Thus, the 35-year-old player was the center-back with the most minutes between club and national team in the seven major European leagues. Back in Portugal, Otamendi finished the season on a high note by winning the League with an eagle on his chest, the 38th national championship for Glorioso.
