GOALS OF THE MATCH

Portugal's first ever victory in a Women's World Cup was achieved on Thursday, July 27, against Vietnam (2-0) and was strongly influenced by Benfica's athletes. In the game from matchday 2 of group E, in New Zealand, the benfiquistas Lúcia Alves, Carole Costa, Ana Seiça, Francisca Nazareth and Jéssica Silva were starters, while Andreia Norton and Sílvia Rebelo came on during the match. Rute Costa and Catarina Amado were not used.

Portugal plays again on Tuesday, August 1st, against the United States. The game from matchday 3 of Group E is scheduled for 8 am Portuguese time. The Portuguese national team need to win to ensure their qualification for the next round, as the United States and the Netherlands drew one-all in the other Group E match.

"Pride" on the arrival of the national team in Lisbon

After their unprecedented participation in the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, the women's national team arrived in Lisbon on Thursday, August 3. The athletes, including the nine Benfica players Rute Costa, Catarina Amado, Ana Seiça, Carole Costa, Sílvia Rebelo, Lúcia Alves, Andreia Norton, Francisca Nazareth e Jéssica Silva, received the affection of the fans who came to Humberto Delgado Airport. With four points amassed in a group with the United States (two-time world champion), the Netherlands, and Vietnam, Portugal did not go through to the round of 16, but Jéssica Silva highlighted the "pride": "We are all very happy. I think we have transcended ourselves." The delegation was also received at the Belém National Palace by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
