Benfica faces Salzburg on matchday 6 of Group D of the Champions League on Tuesday, December 12, at 8 pm. In the "decider" scheduled for Austria, the Reds need to win by two goals to secure a place in the Europa League play-offs.

Three points behind the Austrian champions, the Eagles must win by a difference of two goals (0-2, 1-3 and so on) to level the head-to-head (the first tie-breaker), given their defeat at the Estádio da Luz (0-2) on the opening day of the group. Once this has been achieved, there will be another draw on the second criterion (goal difference) and 3rd place will ultimately be decided by the number of goals scored, in which Benfica already have the advantage: four against three.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CAMPAIGN IN NUMBERS

The numbers of the two teams in the current edition of the Champions League give encouragement to the mission that Benfica will face in Austria. With five games played in Group D, the Reds have one more goal than Salzburg (three against two), with João Mário's three goals standing out, all scored in the draw against Inter (3-3).

In front of almost 50,000 spectators at the Estádio da Luz, Benfica confirmed their qualification for the 2024/2025 Portuguese Cup final on Wednesday night, April 23, by beating Tirsense 4-0 in the second leg of the semi-final (goals from António Silva, Bajrami, Belotti and Barreiro). In the first game, the Eagles had won 0-5. Thus, with a 9-0 aggregate in the semi-final, the Glorioso reached the decisive match of the Portuguese Cup for the 39th time. On their way to Jamor, the Reds overcame Pevidém (0-2), Estrela da Amadora (7-0), Farense (1-3), SC Braga (1-0) and, finally, Tirsense in a two-legged tie.

A moving tribute to Humberto Coelho

Having celebrated his 75th birthday on Sunday, April 20, Humberto Coelho received a heartfelt and well-deserved tribute on Wednesday, April 23, at the Estádio da Luz, during half-time of the Benfica-Tirsense (4-0) second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals. Captain for many years, he wore the Manto Sagrado for “14 fantastic seasons” and, on the pitch, he gave a special thanks to the fans. "This is more than soul, it's an extraordinary mystique! Only at Benfica can you feel this recognition and this glory and memory of having played for the best club in the world," said the former central defender.
