Barreiro reaches 50 games with the "Manto Sagrado"

Signed by Sport Lisboa e Benfica in July 2024, Barreiro reached 50 official games with the Manto Sagrado in the clash against Nice (2-0) last Tuesday, August 12, in the 2nd leg of the Champions League 3rd qualifying round.

It was with great pride that the midfielder reacted to the milestone of 50 games with an eagle on his chest. "I'm very happy, very proud to be able to reach these 50 games for Benfica. I'm very proud," he said in an interview with BTV, naming his hat trick in the 4-0 win over Famalicão, on matchday 18 of the 2024/25 edition of the Liga Betclic, as his most memorable moment in the Glorioso jersey: "I don't think there's much better"

Considered by Bruno Lage to be the soldier every coach would like to have, Barreiro stressed that his priority is always to help the team achieve its goals.

"[Bruno Lage's words] It shows that the work I'm doing every day is being seen and that the manager likes it. I'm here to help the team at all times and that's what I want to pass on to my teammates and the younger players, which is for us all to have the same mentality."

Satisfied with the start of the current season (2025/26), which was brightened by winning the 10th Cândido Oliveira Super Cup, the Luxembourg international praised the work done in an atypical pre-season, on the back of taking part in the Club World Cup.

"We knew that there wasn't much time to work, to start the season, but we were focused on every training session and every game we played to improve our game and to start the season well, as was the case."

Finally, the eagles' No. 18 looked ahead to next Saturday's match, August 16, on matchday 2 of the Liga Betclic against Estrela da Amadora, which marks Benfica's debut in the competition.

"It's very important to start the league on a good note and win the first game. It's a difficult pitch, but we'll prepare as best we can to win that game," he concluded.

CAREER

Coming from German side Mainz, the Luxembourg international played his first minutes with an eagle on his chest on August 11, 2024, in the match against Famalicão on matchday 1 of the 2024/25 edition of the Liga Betclic.

That same season (2024/25), Barreiro played in 47 matches: 27 in the league, 6 in the Portuguese Cup, 1 in the League Cup, 9 in the Champions League and 4 in the Club World Cup. In total, he played more than 2000 minutes on the pitch, scoring 6 goals and providing 3 assists.

Opening the current season (2025/26), he started in the win against Sporting (1-0) and celebrated winning the Cândido de Oliveira Super Cup, his 2nd trophy for Benfica after winning the 2024/25 League Cup. The midfielder was also used in the two games against Nice in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League.
