National Championship 1935/36

The beginning of the saga
In the 2nd edition of the National Championship, in those times called I League, Benfica began a saga that would make the team reach the title of Portuguese champions of the 20th century conquering the first trophy in the competition. With only eight emblems competing, the matches against FC Porto were to a certain extent the ones that allowed Benfica to have an important advantage on the final classification: 21 points, one more than the northern club. A 5-1 victory, at home and a two-goal tie, in the Invicta city (Porto), made all the difference.
