National Championship 1956/57

Otto effect
The year marking the first official broadcast of the Portuguese television, also became the year Benfica won its ninth title. Conquered in the last match, the “red” team got their job done with a 2-0 win at home over Académica, assuring the triumph one point ahead of runner-up and holder of the title, FC Porto. To Brazilian manager Otto Glória, this was the second title in three seasons and the confirmation of his revolutionary playing methods. José Águas, with 30 goals, secured the title of best scorer of the competition as a true top striker, conquering the trophy for the third time in history (the second time in a row).
