In the previous nine duels in the Portuguese Cup final, Benfica beat FC Porto on eight occasions.
29 July 2020, 14h57
After 79 editions of the Portuguese Cup, Benfica has racked up 26 trophies, it is the competition's most decorated club and with the most presences in the final (37, with the match that closes the 2019/20 season and has a kick-off scheduled for Saturday at 8:45 pm).
With the scheduled clash (recall the "Glorioso" road to the final here), Benfica and FC Porto lock horns for the 10th time in the final. The balance of the previous nine finals is largely in Benfica's favor: it won eight. The Reds won 22 goals and only conceded five. Nené and Arsénio are the top scorers in these matches against FC Porto. Both have three goals, the result of hat-tricks in the finals from 1980/81 and 1952/53, respectively.
The Benfica players that have put their names in the scoring sheet in the nine finals played against FC Porto were: Simão Sabrosa, Fyssas, Nunes, Manniche, Carlos Manuel, César, José Augusto (2), Eusébio, António Simões, Serafim, José Torres, Cavém, Rogerio Pipi and José Águas.
As for the coaches who led Benfica in the eight Cup final clashes won against FC Porto were the following: Cândido dos Reis (1952/53), José Alberto Valdivieso (1958/59), Lajos Czeizler (1963/64), Mário Wilson (1979/80), Lajos Baroti (1980/81), Sven-Göran Eriksson (1982/83), Pál Csernai (1984/85) and José Antonio Camacho (2003/04).
