The Portuguese national team reached this stage of the competition after winning Group H, while the Swiss finished in 2nd place in Group G, just behind Brazil. This was the 26th match between the two national teams, the first at a World Cup, and it finished with a thumping victory.
"In a World Cup everything is very fast, we have to focus on the next game now (...) I have to work at my maximum, and then we'll see"
Gonçalo Ramos
Gonçalo Ramos is the first player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup in Qatar, joining the Portuguese forwards (Eusébio, Pauleta and Cristiano Ronaldo) who also did it in the competition. Not since 1990 had a footballer scored a hat-trick in the knockout stage of a World Cup. The last one was the Czech Skuhravy in the World Cup held in Italy.

The Portuguese national team locks horns with Morocco on December 10 (Saturday), at 3 pm, at the Al Thumama Stadium.
Gonçalo Ramos (Benfica forward): "In a World Cup everything is very fast, we have to focus on the next game now. Starting against Morocco? That is not my decision... I have to work at my maximum, and then we'll see. Not even in my wildest dreams did I expect to debut as a starter and with a hat-trick. The expectations in this World Cup are match by match and we will approach the match against Morocco 100% focused."
